For U.S. expatriates in Hong Kong, managing wealth across borders is a matter of precision, compliance, and foresight.
Last October 14, 2025, Unified Global Asia brought these realities to the forefront through Navigating Wealth Abroad: Financial Approaches for U.S. Expats in Hong Kong, a live seminar held at the A&M Hong Kong Office and streamed globally. The evening combined insightful dialogue with canapés, wine, and engaging exchanges among peers.
In partnership with Alvarez & Marsal Hong Kong and MASECO Asia, the event convened experts and U.S. expatriates for a deep dive into the realities of cross-border taxation, investment structuring, and estate planning.
The discussion began with Wade Wagatsuma, Managing Director of Unified Global Asia. Rather than simply running through slides, Wade turned the seminar into a live advisory simulation, walking attendees through realistic scenarios, from passive foreign investment company (PFIC) traps to double taxation issues, highlighting that without expert advice, many individuals inadvertently misreport or underreport their global income.
He emphasized the importance of integrating U.S. and Hong Kong perspectives to create efficient, compliant, and future-ready financial structures.
Mark Scher and Charu Mathur of MASECO Asia opened the discussion by tackling the complexities of managing global wealth.
Mark highlighted how the region's evolving family office landscape is changing the way high-net-worth individuals and families think about structure and succession. He explained that Hong Kong's new family office regime, with its tax incentives and growing infrastructure, is not just attracting capital, but redefining what responsible wealth management looks like.

Charu built on this by addressing how investment decisions, particularly around global portfolios, need to align with a person's long-term story rather than short-term returns. She noted that while structures can preserve wealth, it's the discipline behind them that sustains it.

Arvee Flores, Tax Managing Partner at Unified CPA, LLP, highlighted common pitfalls U.S. expatriates face in tax reporting, especially regarding foreign income and investments.
"Many expats assume that because income is earned overseas, it's exempt from U.S. reporting — but that's rarely the case,” Arvee explained. “The goal isn't just to file; it's to file right, with foresight."

Rigel Mansueto, Tax Offshore Head at Unified CPA, LLP, reinforced this, emphasizing the strategic potential of offshore planning when done transparently.
"The U.S. doesn't prohibit international planning — it just requires transparency,” Rigel said. “Done right, offshore structuring provides flexibility without crossing compliance lines."
They also discussed how real estate investments abroad require careful compliance to avoid costly mistakes, stressing that integrating tax efficiency with clear reporting is key to sustainable wealth management.
The conversation then shifted to the structural side of cross-border planning with Lucas Ting and Yvette Chan of Alvarez & Marsal Hong Kong, who shared how regulatory frameworks across jurisdictions increasingly demand transparency and coordination.
Lucas discussed how entrepreneurs and executives can structure entities to optimize outcomes without triggering U.S. anti-deferral regimes, stressing that simplicity often wins over complexity.

Yvette expanded on this by examining how evolving tax environments, both in Hong Kong and the U.S., call for strategies grounded in both compliance and intention.
Together, they emphasized that successful global planning depends not only on technical accuracy but also on clarity of purpose and communication across advisors.

The session also tackled how trusts can be used (and sometimes overused) in international estate planning. Wade discussed how understanding each jurisdiction's trust recognition rules can prevent conflicts or duplications in estate execution.
They also highlighted emerging alternatives to traditional trusts, such as foundations or private investment companies, which offer flexibility for global families with assets in multiple jurisdictions.

What made the session stand out was its format — not a series of abstract lectures, but a walkthrough of real-world expat concerns.
Through Navigating Wealth Abroad, Unified Global Asia reaffirmed its commitment to bridging expertise across borders and helping clients make confident decisions in an increasingly complex financial world.
